“Well, it’s certainly been an eventful day.” Luke eased onto a bench beside Peyton. Together they gazed out over Wanderlust Lake. Moonlight danced across the water as the distant hum of crickets soothed. The scent of honeysuckle whispered on a light breeze, as if the spirit of Mary Margaret Brennan lingered nearby. Luke shook off the thought, chalking it up to the after-effects of today’s events. “Are you OK?”

“I will be.” Peyton rested her head on his shoulder with a sigh. “But right now I’m blown away by Cameron. I never would have imagined he’d get into something as serious as breaking and entering.”

“I know. Dylan blew a gasket when Cam confessed the whole story. I guess no one wants to hear their kid is in trouble with the law.”

“Thank goodness Maggie’s here to offer the voice of reason.” Peyton sighed. “There’s a lesson to be learned in all of this, for me more than anyone.”

“How so?”

“It’s been a month since Mrs. Hollister brought that music box to me and asked me to do a little research so it might be returned to the rightful owner. If I had been more vigilant I might have discovered it belonged to Maggie, returned it directly to her, and headed off every bit of this.”

“You can’t blame yourself, Pey.” Luke dipped his head to stroke her hair back and place a kiss along her temple. “There are only so many hours in the day and you’ve been working overtime in preparation for the Small Business Expo.”

“I know. I’m glad I remembered to grab the music box as we left the shop tonight. Maggie was thrilled to have it back in her possession. I suppose that’s a little ray of sunshine woven through this mess. Now, the only mystery is how it ended up in the attic of Mrs. Hollister’s great aunt.”

“We may never now. After all, it took a hundred years for Malachi Brennan’s letters to be found.”

“They’re truly a treasure.” Peyton offered a whimsical sigh. “Maggie’s going to loan me a few to display at the shop. Isn’t that wonderful?”

“It is.” After the chaos had passed and they’d settled down to dinner, Maggie had brought out the satchel of letters and handed it to Peyton. As she sifted through the prose, Peyton’s delight was evident. “You’re the only woman I know who considers century-old love letters more impressive than diamonds.”

“Lucky for the guy who finally snags me…he can win my heart with pretty stationary and a pen.”

“I’ll remember that.” Luke tapped his temple. “Duly filed for future reference.”

Peyton smiled like a kid on Christmas morning. It bolstered Luke’s confidence. He’d been taking things slow with her, but maybe it was finally time to make his true feelings known. He’d never know until he tried.

After dinner music drifted from the inn. As if sensing his thoughts at the sound of the languid beat, Peyton pressed a hand to his chest.

“This tune reminds me of when you asked me to dance the final song at the Spring Fling.
